Furnishing with Previously Owned Items | Living Room

If you have been with me for awhile, you know I renovated a villa in Florida which I intended to flip. The more I was there, the more I enjoyed being there and decided to keep it. Along the way, I collected some items intended for staging, but, later became items to furnish a winter home. I had a lot of fun finding pieces that would work together. In many cases, I refinished some pieces. In other cases, the pieces were already in good shape and worked well in the room. In this picture below, only the drapes and area rug were new purchases.

Area Rug

I looked for previously owned area rugs for this space and did not have good luck finding something that I liked. (It’s possible, but I needed to get something while I was at the property and nothing popped up.). I purchased this rug from Home Goods for about $300. I used the colors in the rug as the basis for the colors in the room.

Couch & Pillows

This sleeper sofa is a Facebook Marketplace find for $325. It was in a spare bedroom and rarely used. I intended to recover pillows from the beginning and searched online for fabric that worked well with the rug. The fabric was a bit pricey and only needed to purchase enough for the front and fortunately I was able to reuse the original fabric on the back of the pillow. (It matched the couch fabric.). This was a pretty simple project!

Chair

This chair is part of a loveseat/chair set. The loveseat is in another room. The colors/fabric of the couch and chair work well together for a nice sitting area. The chair and loveseat were $300.

Tables

The coffee table was part of a “swap”. I refinished some bedside tables in exchange for the coffee table and an antique bedroom set. It’s a great piece of furniture and only needed to shine it up a bit.

The table to the right was a “free” piece coming out of property that was to be sold. And, the table to the left is from my cousin. I painted this a couple of years ago to see if I liked the color, which I later used for lower, kitchen cabinets.

Lamps & Shades

The lamps on each side of the couch were also Facebook Marketplace finds — $25 for the pair. The scale works well with the couch and room. The original shades were very dated and I swapped them out for two that were stored in my attic. Large lamp shades are so expensive, so I’m happy I had some packed away. I really wanted to do something fun with the shades and that may be a future project. I still need to spray paint the metal part on the lamp.

Pictures

The large pictures are a find from an estate sale. I had them re-matted and painted the frame.

I believe the total cost for this room is about $1300, which includes the rug and drapes. Not too bad and great quality!
