Great lighting instantly adds warmth, texture and interest to a room. And, if given a choice on home improvement projects, many home owners prefer to update lighting due to the high impact, low effort factor. (From an unofficial Facebook poll). So, how can you shop for lighting, have fun and not be overwhelmed? I recently had to replace all the light fixtures in my new home, learned a few things and happy to share the gold light fixtures I scored in the process.
INSPIRATION
Inspiration is available everywhere nowadays. And, because I have done lots of home improvement sourcing recently, I started out with a broad search and in the end, have focused on a few sites that I refer to regularly for inspiration.
Although Pinterest can be the devil in terms of inspiring a loooong list of projects, it has a great search engine and I use it almost like Google with pictures! For every project, I add a board so I can collect ideas and sources. Many of the pins have links to blogs or websites to source – a time saver when you are ready to purchase.
Houzz
I am super visual, so I love the pictures on Houzz. This site also has the feature of creating project boards. Many of the pictures show sources for easy reference when to purchase. There is shopping functionality on the site as well.
“Home” Websites
There are many home improvement websites such as housebeautiful.com, goodhousekeeping.com, houselogic.com, styleathome.com that are also great sources of inspiration.
SOURCING
Wayfair is my go-to for many home purchases. In fact, I purchased all of my new light fixtures from Wayfair. Lighting.com, Lampsplus.com and Overstock.com are other websites I shop regularly. I always, always, always price compare what I find on any site. All sites have sales at one point or another so I leverage all resources to find the best deal. As a side note, I love Wayfair’s return policy. I did receive a couple of fixtures that were damaged. I filled out a short, online form and was sent a new one with no questions asked. And, I didn’t have to return the original. (I hate going to the post office.)
GOLD LIGHT FIXTURE FAVORITES
My search for light fixtures was a long one in terms of hours spent, but I needed to do this quickly. (My brother-in-law volunteered to install them during a visit, so I needed them all at one time.)
Below are the fixtures I selected. In some instances I found to others that I liked more, but were entirely too expensive — like that ever happens!
To complete the list of fixtures I have in my home, I added the antique fixture that I have brought with me from house to house because I love it so much. I found this at an antique shop 20 years ago or so. It is obviously older than that. I just love it.
