Board & Batten Feature Wall Round Up | A Few Tips

I love a good feature wall! The texture, design and color can make all the difference in the world. There are tons of blogposts detailing how to install board and batten (mostly batten) so, in this blogpost, I am sharing the feature walls I have done so far and a few learnings.

  1. Board – This is not super easy to install, especially if going from the ceiling to floor. If your walls are in good shape, better to avoid it.
  2. Moulding Profile – Tapering the batten into the moulding with a 45 degree cut works well when the moulding has a tapered profile.
  3. Moulding Color – Using batten for the base moulding and painted the same color as batten is a nice cohesive look. (See diamond and second bath feature walls.)
  4. Adhering Batten – Attaching batten with nails and caulking the edges is sufficient. Construction adhesive is not necessary. (Saves on cost and work if you want to remove batten later.)
  5. Caulk – Caulk as you go. Caulking along the long boards is easier than small individual squares. Also, use a pail of water to wet your finger to smooth the caulk. The extra caulk comes off easily in the water and much less messy than using baby wipes.
  6. Scrap Wood – Scrap wood is perfect for smaller features. (See peninsula photo.)
  7. Paint Sheen – Using different paint sheen on the batten and the wall makes for an interesting contract. (See diamond photo.) The wall was sprayed with a flat paint first. And, then the batten was rolled with a smaller roller. The edges of the batten remained in flat paint.

Here is a round up of my board and batten feature walls! Learned so much along the way!
