Every year, I make my kiddos a Christmas ornament. It’s a simple tradition that’s become one of my favorite projects of the season—part homemade keepsake, part “they’ll treasure this someday” craft.
This year, I tried an Anthropologie-inspired ornament trend that’s been all over TikTok… and after a little trial and error, they turned out so cute.
The best part?
They look high-end, but they’re unbelievably simple. (Anthro ornament below.)

Below is the full tutorial so you can make your own—plus how I personalized each one to make them extra meaningful.
MATERIALS
Clear or iridescent plastic ornament balls (the kind that open or have a removable top)
Leftover sample paint (If you are like me, you have a bunch of this!)
Small disposable cups or tray for catching drips
Small funnel (optional but very helpful for pouring paint into the ornaments)
Ribbon (velvet or satin for a more elevated look)
Paint pen or vinyl letters for personalization
Paper towel or wipes for quick cleanup
Glue gun
Glue sticks
Step 1: Add Your Paint
Remove the ornament top. Using a small funnel, pour in a small amount of sample paint. A little goes a long way! (My funnel hadn’t arrived yet from Amazon, so I had to improvise!)
Gently swirl and roll the ornament so the paint coats the inside. Let any excess drip into a cup or tray.
Tips: If you want that soft, dreamy Anthropologie vibe, choose muted, chalky colors. Make sure your paint is room temperature for easy of pouring. If still too thick, add water.
Set the ornaments upside down to fully drain and dry.

step two: personalize
Once the paint inside is completely dry, personalize the outside:
Paint pen for a hand-drawn, heirloom feel
Vinyl letters for a clean, modern look. ( I used the Cricut for my letters. American Typewriter font.)
Metallic marker for a subtle shimmer
Keep it minimal—Anthro ornaments are beautiful because they’re understated.
Step 3: Add Ribbon (The Secret to the High-End Look)
Thread a velvet or satin ribbon through the top and tie a simple bow.
This one tiny step instantly elevates the ornament and gives it that boutique-store finish. I am loving plaid this season! And, this ribbon really made these ornaments festive!
step 4: hang and enjoy
Hang them on the tree or tie them onto gifts as personalized tags.
My kids immediately found theirs on the tree and loved them.

why i love this project
Budget-friendly — uses leftover sample paint
Sentimental — personalized keepsakes that feel thoughtful
Designer-inspired — without the Anthro price
Beginner-friendly — no special tools or skills
When you keep décor simple and intentional, the finished look always feels more curated.
