Bathroom Makeover on a Budget

Bathroom Makeover on a Budget

Bathroom makeovers can be daunting and expensive but totally doable with some diligence in sourcing materials and some elbow grease. My rental property was built in the late 1990’s and the bathroom was original, builder grade and in need of an update — on a budget. Here is a “before” photo.

Materials

Tile

There are so many affordable tile choices nowadays, it was easy to find options that were well-suited for a rental and resale, meaning a classic tile.

I found a marble-look 9 x 11 wall tile at Menards for $.99/ square foot for the bathoom shower and installed it in a staggered vertical pattern. I used bullnose for the perimeter and latter found Schluter edge trim is a more affordable option and provides a clean edge.

I used the same floor tile that I used in the kitchen and master bath. This is from Home Depot and at the time was $1.99/square foot.

The tile in the niche by the vanity was on clearance, also at Home Depot. I only needed 2 sheets.

Vanity

Vanities can be very expensive so I needed to be resourceful to find something current and affordable. I found this vanity, faucet and mirror on Offer Up for $250. I spray painted the mirror silver and added trim to add some interest.

Paint

If I am lucky, I can find a mistint (“oops”) gallon of paint and have it retinted to the color I want. In this case, I purchased a gallon from Sherwin Williams — and, always try to purchase on sale. (Sherwin Williams has 30% and 40% sales regularly.)

Labor

I am not a professional contractor but have learned to tile, paint, install molding/trim and toilets that has saved me a ton on labor costs. I have a handyman who removed/installed the shower walls and installed the vanity/sink. I also had a plumber replace a valve in the shower.
