Christmas Scrabble Letters

Christmas Scrabble Letters

I decided to plan a “sister, cousin, daughter, niece” get together and thought it would be fun to make a Christmas craft together.  For some reason, I forgot no one is really crafty.  Hmmm.  I wasn’t going to let that get me distracted!  Some how I landed on large Scrabble letters with Christmas-y words for the craft project. Pinterest and YouTube are always good resources to me started and I improvised along the way.

Supplies:

Wood: 1 x 5 (back); 1 x 4 (bottom); 1 x 2 (front); 1 x 6 (letters). I purchased 8 ft boards as I was making several trays.

Stain: Whatever color you have on hand or like

Paint: Red and off white (I had these two on hand.)

Saw

Wood glue

Nailer

I cut the length of the tray to accommodate the number of letter tiles for “Christmas” words plus an extra inch on each side.  I attached the front to the bottom and then the back to the bottom using a nailer.  I applied wood glue before nailing.  In the end, I added another square dowel on the inside so the letters would sit high enough in the tray. Hindsight is 20/20 — I could have cut the letters a bit longer or used a shorter front piece on the tray.  So, take this into consideration if you decide to do this project.

I stained the tray and decided it looked too “farmhouse” and then dry brushed red. I love the red – it looks so festive!

The LETTERS

Using the 1 x 6 (really 3/4 by 5.5 inches), I cut the pieces for the letters.  Each letter tile was cut 5.5 inches in length.  (See note about about potentially cutting the letters longer so they sit up in the tray higher.).

I stained the letters and then dry brushed them with off white paint.  The stain poked through just enough to add dimension and interest.

LETTERS

I ordered the vinyl decal, Scrabble letters from Little Acorns by Ro on Etsy.  The letters were super easy to adhere to the wood tiles — almost like stickers.

This was such a fun project and easily adaptable to everyday decor or another holiday!
