We have been adding some practical, decorative touches to my daughter’s new townhouse. I had some left over wall tile, fabric and Mod Podge from other projects and made these into some pretty coasters for her coffee table!
Materials Needed:
4 x 4 white tile (available at The Home Depot or Lowe’s)
Scissors or pinking shears (available at Hobby Lobby, fabric/craft stores)
Mod Podge (any finish, available at Hobby Lobby)
Fabric/Paper (any remnant fabric, decorative napkin/paper, print out)
Felt (corresponding to the fabric/paper, available at Hobby Lobby, fabric/craft stores)
Foam brush or roller (available at Hobby Lobby, fabric/craft stores, The Home Depot/Lowes)
Glue gun (available at Hobby Lobby, fabric/craft stores)
DESIGN
Select the material and design you would like to use for the top and bottom of the coaster. I used fabric for this project, but I have also used decorative napkins (holiday, an “initial”, etc.) Napkins or other paper materials are easier to adhere to the tile due to thickness. That said, the fabric I used worked just fine and the pattern matched the decor. For the coaster bottom, I used felt but I have also seen cork be used for this as well.
CUT
Cut the design materials to fit the size of the tile. This is as simple as setting the tile on the material and tracing around the tile. I used pinking shears on the material to add interest and avoid frayed fabric. Repeat the process for the felt/cork square on the back of the
ADHERE
Apply a layer of Mod Podge to adhere the material for the top to the top of the tile and another layer to the top of the material. I applied a second coat after 15 minutes.
After top is dry, use the glue gun to adhere the felt/cork to the back of the tile.
