As part of the master bath update, I added a small feature wall that was very simple and affordable AND added huge impact through color and dimension. This master bath has both classic and on-trend design features. The traditional lines of the vanity and a classic style of the light fixture pair well with the polished chrome faucet, drawer pulls and towel bars.
I loved the look of the board and batten I recently added board and batten to a kitchen and decided to add some batten and a bold color to create a feature wall in this master bath. Below is the small wall that sits behind the toilet. The blue/gray paint shown was the color of the entire bath and was my nephew’s favorite. (This is my nephew’s bathroom.) I used this color for the feature wall.
The supplies needed to do this project are minimal.
9/16 x 2 1/4 x 84 inches MDF primed molding (There are a lot of options for this. I wanted something thin, not too wide and affordable.)
Adhesive and application gun
Power nailer
Miter Saw
Wood filler
Caulk
One quart paint
Small roller and cover
Paint brush
I sketched out the spacing of the batten to get a sense of the size of each square. I am not great at math — but, I got close to even spacing and consistent size squares.
I applied the top and bottom boards and then added the vertical boards then the horizontal. Then, I caulked all seams and points where the batten met the wall and filled the nails holes with wood filler. I have to admit, at this phase, it was not very satisfying. But, the next morning, I painted it and it looked great.
The feature picture at the top is the finished project. I am very happy with how it turned out. If you are looking for a small project to try out your saw skills or see if you like board and batten or even a bold color — this is a good project to start with.
