Cozy DIY Kitchen Ledge

Cozy DIY Kitchen Ledge

For a recent kitchen renovation, I was looking for a feature that would add some warmth and interest without breaking the bank. The simple route would have been to install the quartz used for the countertop for the ledge as well. But, this would have added to the “white” in the countertop, backsplash and walls.

Big box stores and the local lumber yard were either too costly or did not have 2 x 15 piece of wood. I improvised by joining 3 pieces of 2 x 6 together – similar to how one would assemble a table top.

I selected the most non-warped boards I could find and put them through the table saw to remove the rounded edges. I used the miter saw to cut the board to the needed length (which allowed for 1.5 inches over hang on the end. I used the Kreg Jig to create pocket holes and screw the boards together.

Once assembled, I sanded the surface with a few different grit sand paper. Sherwin Williams did a good job with matching the stain color to the floor. I applied a few coats of stain and poly, lightly sanding between coats.

I found the “brackets” at an estate sale. I sanded these down to remove the darker stain and simply applied poly to finish.

I took a bit of maneuvering to attach the braces, but got it done. I used screws and construction adhesive. In the end these slid a bit down the wall and left a gap between the braces and the ledge. I ripped down, stained and installed small pieces of wood as trim. This worked very well.

This really turned out well!
