These DIY built-ins using Facebook Marketplace furniture started with one cabinet that immediately caught my eye. The doors had character, the proportions were right, and the potential was obvious.
Instead of starting with lumber and power tools, I designed around that one piece.
The Built-In Design Process (Yes, Math Was Involved)
To make these DIY built-ins work, I started with measurements.
I measured:
Wall width
Ceiling height
Baseboard depth
Cabinet spacing
Once the math worked, the design was clear.
Two separate furniture pieces were aligned to read as one built-in. Paint and trim unified everything. Hardware finished the look.
No framing. No construction. Just planning.
Designing Around One Piece: A Repeatable Approach
This is not the first time I’ve designed this way.
I almost always start with one piece and build around it. That approach keeps projects simple and intentional.

Example One: The Salvaged Door Closet (from a historic Chicago home )
A salvaged door from an old Chicago home became the anchor for our master closet. Once the door was installed, the rest of the closet design followed naturally.
Example 2: Display Cabinet Turned Closet Shelving (Florida)
In our Florida home, it was a display cabinet that did the heavy lifting. This is a second home, so I was interested in being resourceful — functional with a custom look and affordable.
It wasn’t meant for a closet at all — but its structure and proportions were perfect. By reworking the interior and turning it into shelving, it became the foundation for the entire closet layout.
