DIY Christmas Decor with Scrap Wood, Cricut, Hot Glue & Glitter

Hand made gifts are a great choice, especially gifting to those who aren’t crafty! And, the craft doesn’t need to be expensive or time-consuming!

I had scrap wood on hand from a toy box I made for my great nephew. I cut these scraps to size; used Restore a Finish for a light coat of base stain; and, then, white washed (small amount of diluted paint on brush) over the stain.

I used the Cricut to cut sparkly letters! This was a learning for me! This is what I learned!

  1. Setting on the Cricut – The “vinyl” setting on the Cricut did not cut through the thickness of the sparkly vinyl. I found the “light weight card stock” was a good setting!
  2. Transfer Tape – I tend to use the same transfer tape, multiple times. In this instance, a fresh transfer tape for each board was a good solution. It was “sticky” enough to have the letters adhere to the transfer tape, but not too sticky that the letters would not come off the transfer tape when putting it on the wood. I tried a stronger adhesion transfer tape. This worked well to transfer the letters to the transfer tape, but VERY difficult to detach the letters from the transfer tape to the wood. Frustrating!

I used a bit of trial and error to adhere the letters to the wood plaques. This was my approach. Sounds simple, but, I went through a few plaques before I got the letters to adhere well.

  1. Use wood with a smooth, sanded surface.
  2. Apply poly over stain/paint and let wood dry 24 hours before adhering letters to surface.

I used molds purchased from Etsy and Hobby Lobby to make the snowflakes and ornaments. The silicone molds were from the baking section. These were a good scape for my project. I filled the molds with hot glue and spray painted with white paint. This was an affordable and quick way to make these. The snowflakes were adhered with E6000. I used this type of embellishment on this and this project.

I also made smaller versions of these! Fun!
