When you think of fall, chances are you picture pumpkins, orange leaves, and all the warm tones of the season. But fall doesn’t have to be orange. This photo below inspired the look for my buffet. This year, I set a buffet that’s equal parts cozy and fresh, using black and white buffalo checks paired with bright sunflowers for a look that feels timeless and welcoming.
Here are the simple elements I used to pull it together:
1. The Base Layer: Buffalo Check
A black and white buffalo check table runner instantly grounds the buffet. It’s classic, graphic, and keeps the look fresh instead of fussy. Bonus: it transitions beautifully into other seasons with just a few swaps.
2. The Focal Point: Sunflowers
Nothing says cheerful fall like sunflower décor. Tuck them into a vase, scatter smaller stems along the table, or even pair them with greenery for a fuller look. Their bright yellow glow softens the bold checks and adds warmth.
3. Neutral Dishes + GOLDEN YELLOW Serveware
Golden yellow platters repeat the golden yellow of the sunflowers continuing the pop of color. Glass pitchers, candlestick holders or wooden serving boards let the pattern and flowers shine. This keeps the buffet looking intentional but not overcrowded.
4. buffalo check pumpkins

4. cozy accents
Think candles, lanterns, or even a basket of apples, gourds or pumpkins. Little touches like these bring the cozy fall décor vibe and make guests take an extra peek at the display.

You don’t need orange pumpkins to create cozy fall décor. A mix of buffalo check, sunflowers, and handmade accents creates a buffet that feels just as warm and inviting — with a fresh, simple twist.
