Free Little Library

Free Little Library

This Free Little Library came to life with 13 cedar pickets and a stained glass window. This project was the brain child of my friend, Chris, who is an avid reader with an adorable lake cottage in Michigan.

I am not an experienced builder and have only done a couple of “build” projects – using plans. For this build, I was working around the leaded glass and cedar pickets that were warped (#lumbersupplyduetoCovid). I was able to work with this, especially at 50% off.

I began with the door and then built the library to work with the dimensions of the door.

Building with the cedar pickets, there are a lot of seams. I added batten along each seam with the hopes that it would prevent rain from leaking into the library. (I also used silicone on all the seams.)

Next came the roof, gables and a shelf. (Don’t look too closely – this was challenging!)

We applied tinted sealer, a puck light on the inside, hinges and a door handle!

We used a whiskey barrel as the base of the library and added cement around the 4 x 4 cedar post. (We didn’t want to dig 2 two feet down and really wanted to add flowers.) It would have been less expensive to build a cedar planter but there was no more cedar and no more time. 🙂

I am really happy with how it turned out. It was a fun build and a great visit to Michigan to install. I hope many readers enjoy their time at the lake with a good book!
