Laundry Room Refresh for $60

Laundry Room Refresh for $60

This project started with my ambition to put left over DIY supplies to good use and de-clutter my garage! A free cabinet and a buffet top were the beginnings of this laundry room re-fresh! And, this laundry room needed some storage and a little personality.

Buffet Top Turned Shelving

This piece of wood is the top to a buffet that I turned into my master bath vanity. It’s been sitting in my garage for 2 years and I am happy to give it another purpose!

The piece was covered in veneer and fortunately in good shape. I gently sanded the top to remove the varnish and stain. The unfinished bottom required a bit of sanding to smooth it out.

I cut the wood down into shelves to fit; repaired a couple of areas with wood filler before adding stain and poly. Trim finished off two shelf edges nicely. The other two had the veneer strip.

The shelf brackets were one of two things to purchase for this project. I selected matte black to coordinate with the door lever and cabinet handle.

Cabinet

I was given this cabinet when I purchased 3 others for a reno last year from Facebook Marketplace and was anxious to get it out of my garage. The color coordinated nicely with the kitchen cabinet paint (SW March Wind). This cabinet was never used apart from being in a cabinet showroom. Score! My son helped attach to the wall. The scale of the cabinet hardware works well with this cabinet and left over from some barn doors I made several years ago.

Feature Wall

SW Alabaster, the paint color I use on ceilings and moldings, worked well for the base color of the feature wall. It was just enough to brighten up the small room and offer nice contrast to the black paint used for the stencil. (Black paint color is a color match of Behr Limousine Leather, using SW Emerald paint. This color was used on doors from another project and it looked fantastic.)

Using the full stencil was straightforward. However, trying to wrap it around the corner was a mess. In the end, I created a border for some definition and it looked fine. The “Star Tile Stencil” is from Cutting Edge. It was super affordable at about $10. The 3D effect – super cool and a great surprise.

I installed the brackets and added the shelves. So happy with how these turned out!
