New Furniture Function & Design with Six Simple Changes

Ever look at a dated furniture piece and wonder how to give it new life? This piece was a handmade sideboard and needed a bit of a transformation. (I only tackled the bottom piece.)

I took lots of inspiration from several intragramers and furniture manufacturers and cobbled together great features into a single piece!

Reduce the Height

I thought this piece would work well as a TV console. The height was reduced 8 inches to 28 inches. I also removed the panels in the small doors.

Shelf

I used wood from my scrap wood pile to add a bottom shelf.

Embellishment

I had left over “pole wrap” from an earlier project and used this on the drawer fronts and side panels. I cut the pole wrap to size and adhered with construction adhesive. I’ve seen Eye in the Detail use this all the time and loved everything she has done with it. Easy! Tip: Before the pole wrap is adhered to furniture, sand the edges of each wood strip. This is much easier when the pole wrap is flexible as opposed to adhered to the furniture.

Paint

I applied primer and SW Emerald Urethane with a paint sprayer. I love this paint and the look of a sprayed finish. The paint color was a color match from Behr (Limousine Leather). The paint color totally transforms the piece.

Hardware

I used black cabinet hardware. I really like the black on black look for this piece. Here is the link to the knobs and the drawer pulls .

Faux Canning

I used this table runner that added a canning like texture. It was a great suggestion from @a.dabbled.dwelling and, super affordable. I also had leftover material to use as drawer liner!

I couldn’t be more thrilled with how this turned out! So, cute!
