Play Kitchen

Play Kitchen

This DIY play kitchen was one of my favorite projects! Using mostly salvaged and surplus materials, this was a super affordable project.

These are the materials we started out with for the build. Let’s take a look at how we put it together!

The Build

I looked at build plans from Shanty2Chic and Ana White to get an idea of how to build the cabinet boxes. In the end, the size of the play kitchen was guided by the size of the cabinet doors. The cabinet doors were salvaged from a neighbor’s kitchen that was remodeled. The boxes were made from 1/2 inch plywood and 1 x 4 boards. The base was primed and sprayed with SW March Wind.

Backsplash

The backsplash and trim of top of the refrigerator were salvaged from a 100 year old buffet from a previous project. I hand painted black and white checks and a ribbon of blue as well.

Countertop

The “faux butcher block” countertop was salvaged from a hutch that I made into vanity. I sanded it down and applied stain and poly.

Stove Top

I love the look of the stove top. The round discs are from Hobby Hobby. I painted a circle in the middle and added wood pieces, made from 5 gallon paint sticks, to the top to create the burners. The knobs on the side are salvaged from a dresser. Vinyl decals were DIYd with a Cricut for the settings for the burners.

Sink and Faucet

The faucet base is a bun foot salvaged from a dresser and painted. The top of the faucet was made from wood scraps. The sink is a bowl that is a Good Will find ($2.99). A hole was created to make the bowl a drop-in sink.

Oven

Plexiglass was used to create the oven door. I added trim around the perimeter of the glass. Vinyl decals were added to the knobs to make the controls for the oven.

To date, this is the funnest project I’ve done. So much opportunity to be creative! This little girl loved her birthday gift.
