I have to admit when I decided to go to Rancho La Puerta, in Tecate, Mexico, it was really to satisfy a brewing curiosity about the “spa experience”. Something seemed to be pulling me here and I just imagined the experience would be transformative.
Setting Intention
A great beginning for almost any experience is setting intention. The “Set Your Ranch Intention” guided session helped to both open the mind and anchor on your thoughts on the possibilities for the week ahead. Here are some questions from the session that helped me set my intention for the week.
- Whenever I made my reservation for the Ranch, what did I intend for myself?
- When I was packing, what was I excited about when coming to the Ranch?
- What is the one thing that would make this week a smashing success?
For each of these questions, we wrote just 2 or 3 words. And, then from the list of words, we selected one that speaks to us. This one word is the intention for the week.
“Revitalize” was my intention for the week. While this almost sounds like a passive activity, it does require awareness of the things that evoke interest, curiosity and infuse or renew energy. I also realize that part of realizing my intention are activities that are restorative.
The Ranch Grounds
The Ranch is nestled in a mountain pass instilling peace, mindfulness, stability, strength and energy with each glance. Now, I live in Illinois – it is incredibly flat, so I was a bit mesmerized and felt re-charged from the magnificence of the mountains. The grounds are lush with artful landscape, calming water features and winding brick walking paths.
The Ranch Experience
The “vibe” of the Ranch is conducive to restoration. It is insulated from electronic influences; fragrance and noise (not sound) – which I have to admit, I needed to step into limited internet access – but, in the end, able to be more centered and present.
One can be as physically active as one wants to/can be on the Ranch. There is a wide variety sessions including scenic hikes, circuit training, strength and conditioning, spin, cardio dancing, swimming, pickle ball, tennis, running, swimming, yoga, stretch, meditation — and, the list goes on. I made an attempt to try several new things that I wouldn’t be inclined to try at home. It was fun to explore and sample.
The sessions on nutrition, sleep, mindfulness are holistic and renewing. The painting, jewelry, sculpting and cooking classes tap into the creative side and fun! The art around the Ranch is lovely to take in as well.
The Ranch cuisine is healthful and made from whole foods. You will never go hungry – but, staving off sugar, carbs and burgers takes some will power!
Community
The demographic of the Ranch guests is mostly women and if I were to guess, mostly 50 + year old. I don’t know this statistically – only from observation. There was a great sense of community. Many (most) were repeat guests, returning as many as 26 times. There were several mother/daughter, husband/wife, college friends, work friends and solo travelers all at the same time. Independent of what brought one there, conversation was abundant, friendly, enjoyable and inclusive.
Revitalize
Did I realize my intention? Yes! I found great energy from the new friends and beautiful surroundings. It is my aim to continue down the road with better nutrition and to improve my flexibility and mobility in 2019. I look forward to returning to the Ranch again.
