Use What You Have + Add One: A $10 Valentine’s Day Welcome Mat (30-Minute DIY)

Use What You Have + Add One: A $10 Valentine’s Day Welcome Mat (30-Minute DIY)

January can feel long. If your home feels a little stale, don’t wait for “someday.” Refresh now—with one small change.

Here’s my favorite decorating rule:

Use what you have and add one thing.

That’s exactly how I updated my front door for Valentine’s Day. This welcome mat DIY cost about $10 and took about 30 minutes.

What I Changed (The “Add One” Method)

I already had a bottom outdoor mat from Christmas (red with a little pink weave). So I kept it.

Then I swapped my New Year mat for a Valentine’s mat on top.

That’s the whole strategy:

Keep the base layer you already own

Swap one seasonal layer

Call it done

Simple wins in January matter.

Materials (Budget-Friendly)

You probably have most of this already.

Plain coir welcome mat (mine is from Walmart)

Craft paint (mine was from Dollar Tree, but it is also on sale at Walmart now – get a couple!)

-Paper (for a template)

-Sharpie

-Paintbrush

Step-by-Step: $10 Valentine’s Day Welcome Mat DIY

1) Make a simple pattern

Keep the design bold and easy to trace. I looked at Pinterest, ChatGPT and looked for something that would be cute, but forgiving to trace and paint. Good options:

Hearts

XOXO

LOVE

Simple stripes or dots

I made my pattern from paper, then cut it to the size I wanted. I have done this previously using a Cricut and this works well too.

2) Trace your design

Place your paper pattern on the mat and trace the outside edges with a Sharpie. I used a sharpie in the colors I was using (black/red). You could also use a paint pen as well.

Don’t overthink it. Clean and simple beats perfect.

3) Paint

Use craft or acryllic paint and a brush. Apply an even coat and don’t overload the brush (coir soaks paint fast).

If you want stronger color, add a second light coat after the first dries. This took a lot of paint, but was easy to apply.

4) Let it dry

Set the mat somewhere flat and let it dry completely.

5) Layer and swap

Place your finished mat on top of your existing base layer. When the season changes, swap the top mat again.

That’s how you decorate without starting over every time.

Tips for a Better Result (Without More Work)

Choose high-contrast colors so the design reads from the sidewalk.

-Keep the design large (tiny details disappear on coir).

-Do a quick test stroke on the corner to see how the paint absorbs.

-If your mat will get heavy weather, consider a clear outdoor spray sealer (optional).

Why This Works So Well in January

January is when people get stuck waiting:

-waiting for warmer weather

-waiting for motivation

-waiting for more time

This is a reminder that you can change the feel of your home with one small action.

Use what you have. Add one thing. Move on.
