You are not alone in having some nerves around starting a new project — especially if the project is big or involved or requires new or different tools and skills. Believe me, I have been there many times and have managed through the overwhelm using these strategies.
Chunking
If project-size has moved you into overwhelm, chuck the project into several smaller phases and tackle these one at a time. For example, a bathroom renovation could be chunked into (1) demo; (2) plumbing (3) tile; (4) painting; (5) vanity installation; and, (6) lighting. The individual phases are not likely as daunting.
Research
There is so much information available online through blogs, YouTube, Pinterest, etc. Inspiration, tips, trainings are available for almost everything — research what you need for your project such as sourcing materials, tile installation, materials needed, etc. Also, don’t limit your research to online.
Building Experience
Shadowing: If you have the opportunity to work alongside someone with experience, this is some of the best learning! I learned to tile by leveraging the knowledge of my brother-in-law and my handyman! Both were very generous with providing guidance and letting me work alongside of them.
Leverage Previous Experience: Also, while a project may be new, think about how you can leverage experiences from other projects. For example, if you have experience using a table saw but have not used a wet saw, remind yourself that you have used a saw before (have confidence in that) and fill in any skill/knowledge gaps.
Start Small: This has proved to be an effective strategy for me. When I learned to tile, I started with a laundry room floor, then a backsplash. Presently, I am tackling some builds — I started with a mantel and moved onto a pedestal. Each project moves on a bit in complexity and builds confidence.
Just Start
Don’t let overwhelm and overthinking prevent you from starting a project! Most times, just beginning a project can build momentum and confidence. Do your homework. Be prepared and smart. Just start!
Good luck! If I can do it, you can do it!
