Portland, Maine & Acadia | Fun activities for a quick trip

Portland, Maine was so pretty, fun and full of charm this time of the year! (June) I joined the “Girls Love Travel” Facebook page and got some good tips on what to do and where to stay in the area. We knew we wanted to spend a day at Acadia National Park and visit some small towns along the way from Portland, ME to Bar Harbor, ME (Acadia)

Accommodation in Portland, ME (Cape Elizabeth)

Affordable flights guided our decision on which airport to fly into (Portland). We stayed at this AirBnB in Cape Elizabeth, ME. Cape Elizabeth is 15 minute drive from Old Port (an area we wanted to explore a bit) but the hotels in this area in June were $400/night. This AirBnB is nestled in a beautiful neighborhood with mature trees and the hosts are lovely. It was definitely an affordable and practical option for an overnight stay.

Fort Williams Park (Cape Elizabeth)

We wanted to see a lighthouse or two on our visit and fortunately, the Fort Williams Lighthouse was on our morning run! It is a lovely park! Super dog friendly (which I love), lovely paths for walking/running/hiking!

Old Port

This was a recommendation for the Girls Love Travel Facebook page. There are lots of cute shops and restaurants. It was just fun to walk around. Parking was easy to find. We ate at Luke’s — a great view of the water!

Accommodation near Acadia National Park

We took the scenic route up the coast to Acadia as opposed to the highway. There were many cute shops.

I am not a super “nature-y” traveler. Generally, I am more comfortable in a hotel. But, I wanted to give “glamping” a try and it works so well with a visit to a national park. Under Canvas has glamp-sites near most national parks. We stayed at Under Canvas Acadia and it was great! This is definitely a few steps up from camping with super comfy bed/bedding, wood stoves, bathrooms and showers. The tents are appointed with rechargeable lanterns to light the tent, bedding and towels. The “main tent” housed registration, dining, games, etc. and faced the water. Simply beautiful. The campsite was about 25 minutes from Acadia and an easy drive.

Acadia National Park

I do like to visit the national parks for a day to take in the outdoors and a bit of hiking. We reserved parking (required) to park at the top of Cadillac Mountain to see the sunrise. From Under Canvas, we left an hour prior to when we wanted to be at the top of the mountain. The views were beautiful.

We enjoyed a hike up Cadillac Mountain. It was steep, rocky but had lovely views!

Capitol Building – Augusta

On our way back to the Portland Airport, we passed by the capitol building for a photo!

So glad we made this trip happen. A perfect little get away!
